Speech, Language and Swallowing Disorders in the Symptomatology of Post-COVID-19 SyndromeMiscellaneous

Mgr. Simona Hlaváčová

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):77-83 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.018932

COVID-19 is a highly contagious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, and its pandemic has gradually affected the entire world. While most symptoms of this disease disappear during the acute phase, some symptoms may persist for several months. This condition is referred to as the post-COVID-19 syndrome. Cognitive impairment is one of the possible long-lasting symptoms that are directly related to patients' communication abilities. These difficulties manifest mainly in the area of verbal recall, verbal fluency and the informational value of discourse. This review summarises the existing information on cognitive-communication disorders associated...

Variability and Consistency in the Speech of Typically Developing Monolingual Slovak Children aged 5;07 to 6;00 yearsMain topic

doc. PhDr. Dana Buntová, Ph.D., doc. PaedDr. Jana Marková, Ph.D., PhDr. Zuzana Oravkinová, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):68-75 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.019656

Variable speech in children is considered a natural physiological phenomenon. This variability typically decreases as development progresses, leading to more consistent speech. If pathological phonological processes accompany variable production, inconsistent production can be a predictor of dyslexia. Analyzing the development of natural physiological variability and consistency is crucial for diagnosing speech inconsistency. The study aims to describe the performance of Slovak unimpaired monolingual children with appropriate speech intelligibility, aged between 5;07 to 6;00 years, regarding the consistency and variability of speech. In a study of...

Mgr. Eliška Macků, Mgr. Naděžda Lasotová, MBA, doc. PhDr. Ilona Bytešníková, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):59-67 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.029771

The aim of this review is to provide a brief summary of the current knowledge regarding the predictors of language and speech development in boys with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). DMD is the most prevalent rare genetic neuromuscular disease of childhood, affecting mainly boys. It is characterised by progressive muscle weakness with an unfavourable prognosis. In addition to motor difficulties, neurodevelopmental difficulties, particularly in language and speech development are common in these boys and may precede motor symptoms. This review highlights the importance of regarding non-motor developmental milestones as indicators of possible neurodevelopmental...

Effect of synergistic reflex therapy on the development of speech and food intake in child with central hypotonia: a case reportMain topic

PhDr. Andrea Mazancová

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):40-46 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.026768

This case report aims at providing information on the possibilities of widening the classic interventions by using the Synergistic Reflex Therapy (SRT) concept. In this case, a female child patient with central hypotonia and dysphagia in the oral phase is presented. An important aspect during her treatment is the support of speech therapy methods, such as oral position therapy, basal stimulation and respiratory exercise by including SRT, which is provided several times per year in two-week sessions. Myofascial techniques, pressure points and reflex massages of the head were used, which led to relaxation/toning of the patient in a helpful way, so that...

Potential of Modelling to Support Communication Skills of Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders in Early InterventionMain topic

PhDr. Kateřina Štinglová

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):33-39 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.025848

Ways of supporting the communication skills of children with neurodevelopmental disorders in the home environment seem to be a marginal area of professional interest. The aim of this paper is to present one of the alternative and augmentative communication strategies - namely, modelling, that can be provided to families by early intervention. The paper situates modelling in the context of alternative and augmentative communication and presents this strategy as a potentially relevant way in which families can repeatedly convey the meaning and principles of communication to children with these disorders.

Theory of Mind and its reflection in Children's Narrative AbilitiesMain topic

Mgr. Monika Janíková, Ph.D., Mgr. Terézia Horská, doc. Svetlana Kapalková, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):21-27 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.0231105

Theory of Mind and narrative abilities are closely related in a bidirectional way. On the one hand, Theory of Mind is reflected in the quality of discourse production and comprehension, and on the other hand narrative input influences the development of Theory of Mind in children. The present contribution is theoretical in nature, defining the Theory of Mind, its development, and describing in more detail its relationship to narrative abilities in children. It also provides information on the possibilities of assessing Theory of Mind within a narrative context in the child population.

Oral Intake in Preterm ChildrenMain topic

Mgr. et Bc. Karolína Červinková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):14-20 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.021875

The oral intake of premature babies is made more difficult by their immaturity, so it is necessary to pay more attention to their oral intake. Globally, these babies are approached by focusing on the quality of oral intake, rather than the quantity, as a prerequisite for the formation of the mother-child bond, the optimal development of oral-motor skills, facial parts (splanchnocranium) and other related areas. For this reason, a clinical speech and language pathologist (SLP) specialising in this area features increasingly as part of the comprehensive care of premature babies with feeding problems. This often begins immediately after birth, when the...

Language delay in the context of current scientific findingsMain topic

Mgr. Alžběta Zemánková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(2):4-13 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.0222104

The review study focuses on the topic of language delay (LD), which represents an early delay in language development. This early delay may be a symptom of certain neurodevelopmental disorders (autism spectrum disorders, developmental intellectual disabilities, developmental language disorders, developmental learning disorders) or may spontaneously disappear during development. The second variant of the developmental trajectory is referred to in the Czech clinical speech therapy community as simple language delay. In the Czech environment, on the one hand, the overuse of this term is pointed out; on the other hand, there is a lack of information that...

Coexistence of motor and functional language deficits based on ICD-11 criteria in children with autism spectrum disorder - An exploratory studyMiscellaneous

Tereza Možná, Hana Válková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):68-76 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.013611

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neuro-developmental disorder that is characterised by considerable heterogeneity and the occurrence of secondary symptoms, including motor function disorders and disturbances in motor development. The study's main objective was to assess the coexistence of motor and functional language deficits (FL), scaled according to ICD-11 criteria, and standardised evaluation using the motor test for children: The Movement Assessment Battery for Children, 2nd edition (MABC-2). In the research sample (n = 47; 39 boys, 8 girls; age 7-10 years, average age = 8.49; SD = 1.12), the results revealed that 74.5% of the participants...

Application of the InterACT Programme in Speech Therapy PreventionMiscellaneous

Hana Laciková, Joanna Szymczakowska

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):60-67 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.012606

In this paper we discuss the InterACT - Attitude Change & Tolerance programme (Weidner, 2015) for preschool and younger school-age children, as well as the process of its adaptation into Polish (2019) and Slovak (2019-2023) languages. The programme builds on several research studies that have investigated children's attitudes towards stuttering and the possibilities of early exposure to relevant information about stuttering. Research has confirmed the need to address changing attitudes towards stuttering already at pre-school age. Statistically, the InterACT programme has been shown to be effective in improving children's attitudes toward stuttering...

Exercise-induced Laryngeal ObstructionMiscellaneous

Barbora Kalendová, Jiří Dostal

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):53-59 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.014662

Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) is a common cause of exertional dyspnoea occurring at maximal exertion in individuals with normal laryngeal morphology and function at rest. It is most frequent in adolescent females and in sports with high ventilation demands. The obstruction results from the adduction of laryngeal structures during inhalation, occurring either at the level of the glottis with paradoxical vocal fold movement, or more commonly with supraglottic adduction and inward prolapse of aryepiglottic folds and surrounding structures. It is often mistaken for asthma-related dyspnoea.

INTERNATIONAL DYSPHAGIA DIET STANDARDISATION INITIATIVE (IDDSI) - SLOVAK TRANSLATION AND ADAPTATION OF THE IDDSI FRAMEWORKMiscellaneous

Silvia Adzimová, Adriana Kumorová, Lenka Lešková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):41-52 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.0101132

Introduction: The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) framework is the first and currently the only professionally recognised standardised system for people with swallowing disorders. It is aimed at evaluating and describing foods with different levels of texture modification and differently thickened beverages, as well as testing them. The system is relatively unknown in Slovakia.

Tethered Oral Tissues in a Multidisciplinary PerspectiveMiscellaneous

Jana Mironova Tabachová, Pavla Hladíková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):33-40 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.015723

Tethered oral tissues can be considered as an issue that belongs under the scope of many specialists, such as paediatricians, lactation consultants, dentists, speech therapists, orthodontists, physiotherapists, ENT doctors and others. It is necessary to look at tethered oral tissues comprehensively in a broader timeframe. The article summarises the impact of tethered oral tissues on the patient throughout their development and highlights areas that could provide diagnostic clues to detect tethered oral tissues and their management from a multidisciplinary team perspective. The older the patient, the more specialists will be involved in their treatment....

DIAGNOSIS OF SOCIAL PRAGMATIC COMMUNICATION DISORDER THROUGH QUESTIONNAIRES, RATING SCALES AND TEST METHODSMiscellaneous

Michaela Plšková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):28-32 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.009680

The present article deals with the possibilities of diagnosing social pragmatic communication disorder (SPCD), focusing on questionnaire methods, test methods and assessment scales. Abroad, diagnosis of this disorder is often done through a combination of interviews, questionnaires, rating scales, observations and other methods. The aim of this paper was to create an integrative overview, i.e. to summarise questionnaire methods, rating scales and test methods that are aimed at diagnosing pragmatic language. For this purpose, seven methods were selected that deal with the recognition of deficits in pragmatic language, developed between 1989 and 2023....

When PPA is not only about PPA - a case report of a female patient with primary progressive aphasia and functional speech disorderMiscellaneous

Bianka Hrnčiarová

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):23-27 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.008538

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a clinical syndrome caused by a neurodegenerative process. PPA is characterised by a progressive disruption of the language system, which limits the patient in activities of daily living. The symptoms of this disease mostly manifest around 50 years of age, but are often seen in a much younger population. Acquaintance with this kind of diagnosis represents a certain psychological burden to the patient. Coping with it depends on the patient's personality traits (Nash, Hutner and Caligor, 2014). Inadequate stress processing can lead to development of a functional movement disorder (Thenganatt and Jankovic, 2015). Here...

Ema Číčelová, Lukáš Varga, Žofia Frajková

Listy klinické logopedie 2024, 8(1):11-17 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2024.003476

Unilateral laryngeal paresis can lead to dysphonia as well as respiratory and swallowing deficits. The pathomechanism of swallowing dysfunction in unilateral laryngeal paresis is decreased sensitivity of supraglottic structures, impaired protective function of reflexive cough and weakening of the upper oesophageal sphincter muscles. The subject of this case report is an 85-year-old man with unilateral laryngeal paresis, developed after gastrofibroscopy, with signs of severe oropharyngeal dysphagia leading to aspiration pneumonia. The patient was managed by a dysphagiology team leading the diagnostic and therapeutic process. This case study describes...
