Proprioceptive sensorimotor feedback in the rehabilitation of oropharyngeal dysfunction with the use of physiological muscle interaction – case reports

MUDr. Martin Kučera

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):4-12 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0102085

The author of the article has summarised his experience with the rehabilitation of combined speech and swallowing disorders in the oropharyngeal area in adults. The essence of the described therapeutic procedures is the use of the sensorimotor and physiological muscle contraction of the upper limb and muscles of the oropharyngeal region. This rehabilitative procedure allows for the whole motoric pattern (swallowing, articulation) to be worked with, and not merely its parts. The efficiency and specifics of these treatment techniques are documented in individual case reports. The author of the article is the originator of this technique.

Upper airway obstruction in rhinitis and rhinosinusitis

MUDr. Jitka Vydrová

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):13-16 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0161689

Rhinosinusitis is one of the most common diseases of the upper airways. It affects more than 10 % of adults and 70 % of children. Rhinosinusitis is a frequent cause of work incapacitation. The main symptoms include nasal congestion, and persistent or recurrent nasal secretion. It may commonly cause deterioration of the olfactory sense and pain in the facial area. The duration of acute rhinosinusitis is up to 12 weeks. The disease may be protracted and may become chronic despite therapy. In childhood, acute and chronic rhinosinusitis are associated with a persistent or recurrent cough and hypertrophy of the nasopharyngeal adenoid vegetations. The diagnosis...

Rhinophonia aperta & dysphagia – affiliated complications of soft palate carcinoma treatment (a case study)

Mgr. et Mgr. Silvia Adzimová

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):17-26 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0151800

Carcinoma of the oropharynx represents the most common malignant disease of the pharynx. In our paper, we deal with the case study of a patient with acquired rhinophonia aperta and dysphagia as concomitant symptoms of the surgical treatment, radiation therapy and chemotherapy treatment of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the small salivary gland of the soft palate. In our more extensive introduction, we present the most important medical information on this topic for a better understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration. The following is a case study of a patient who was provided with clinical Speech Therapy in the form of consultations during hospitalisation....

Adenoid vegetation from the point of view of an ENT specialist and phoniatrist

MUDr. Dagmar Hošnová, Ph.D., MUDr. Milan Urík, Ph.D.

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):27-30 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0134003

Rhinolalia is the pathological increase or decrease of nasality in speech. One of the most common causes of rhinolalia clausa in children is adenoid vegetation. This is clinically manifested by mechanical obstruction of the nasopharynx, with resulting symptoms such as nasal respiratory distress, snoring, sleep apnoea syndrome, snuffing, obstruction of the tubal torus with subsequent exudate in the middle ear and hearing impairment. It further acts as an infectious focus with a number of complications. Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms, and examination of the nasopharynx, which fully fall within the competence of an ENT specialist. It is often...

Early intervention in premature babies with the risk of developing cerebral palsy

Mgr. Barbora Červenková

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):32-36 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0062446

The number of babies born before the 37th week of pregnancy is steadily increasing worldwide. Thanks to high-quality medical care, the number of extremely premature babies in the Czech Republic has been increasing in recent decades. This group of infants is at higher risk of developing cerebral palsy. Until the turn of the century, most of the published papers focused on how to ensure an infant's survival. Currently, the focus of interest is also shifting to the issue of ensuring the highest quality of neurodevelopmental care. In the last decade, the range of rehabilitation methods has expanded significantly. The current trend is to develop a child's...

Primary reflexes and their influence on motor and speech development

Mgr. Marja Volemanová

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):37-44 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0116168

Development of motor skills, primary reflexes and speech development are interconnected. But how? I work with children daily with persistent primary reflexes. These children experience problems at school (learning disorders, attention deficits), with motor skills (inferior gross and fine motor skills, inferior graphomotor skills, coordination of movements), autistic symptoms, speech delay and articulation disorders, which are the topic of this article. I like to work together with Speech Therapists to offer children with these problems the most comprehensive approach and care. The aim of this article is to explain concisely and clearly the link of...

Best practice in working with children who have developmental language disorder: a focused review of the current research evidence base (article in English)

Hazel Roddam, Jemma Skeat

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):72-78 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0144889

The purpose of this paper is to provide a synthesis of the current international research evidence base regarding best practice in the diagnosis and treatment of children with language disorders. We begin with a discussion about the terminology used and how this relates to identification and diagnosis, and then describe assessment and treatment practices. The discussion of intervention and case management of these children focuses on the use of high quality evidence that presents an overview of treatment approaches, rather than specific treatment programmes that may not be relevant to all international practice settings. The paper sets the context...

Effectiveness of VitalStim therapy in dysphagia treatment: a review article

Mgr. Markéta Zatloukalová

Listy klinické logopedie 2020, 4(1):87-92 | DOI: 10.36833/lkl.2020.0123657

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation has been used as a therapeutic method for many years. VitalStim is the device specifically developed for the electrical stimulation of the head and neck muscles. In the Czech Republic, this is a relatively new therapeutic technique. However, it has been used abroad since 2001. Its use for therapy in patients with dysphagia has been widely discussed among experts. Although a number of studies have been performed, the effectiveness of this therapeutic approach has not been clearly established. The presented systematic review aims to analyse the results of selected foreign studies focused on this issue and to provide...
