The article gives a historical overview and the state of the art concerning childhood stuttering. It deals with the well-established and recommended methods of treating stuttering and of advising parents. According to the ICF model, the reader should be enabled to deduce the two-step diagnostic procedure, the counselling and - if necessary - the scheduling of therapy. According to the German guidelines, recommended therapeutic methods are mentioned. The state of the art concerning research into therapy is critically discussed.
